Although many desserts make for a sweet ending to delicious meals, there's something so inviting about a moist and tender cobbler to add that yum factor. Cobbler consists of a fruit filling covered in a biscuit batter of sorts. When baked, the ingredients blend together to form a spoonable treat that is tender but with the right amount of bite.

Peach Cobbler

Servings: 9

5 peaches, peeled, cored and sliced (about 4 cups)

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

For the batter:

6 tablespoons butter

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup milk

Ground cinnamon

1. Add the sliced peaches, sugar and salt to a saucepan and stir to combine. If using canned peaches, skip steps 1 and 2 and follow the directions starting at step 3.

2. Cook on medium heat for just a few minutes, until the sugar is dissolved and helps to bring out juices from the peaches. Remove from heat and set aside.

3. Preheat oven to 350 F. Slice butter into pieces and add to a 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Place the pan in the oven while it preheats, to allow the butter to melt. Once melted, remove the pan from the oven.

Not everyone who is dedicated to attending car shows actually have cars. Deciding if you are interested in attending the car show is often dependent on your personality but realizing that there is much more to the car show than simply walking the rows and rows of cars is often enough to catch many people’s interest.

While car shows are not always considered a sport, they often help to foster great sportsmanship amongst competitors and can be a great way to share experiences and learn plenty about cars. When you see repair shops advertising “Brake Jobs,” that is usually what they’re focused on – the pads. The truth is, there’s far more to the assembly than the pads, calipers, and rotors.

In order for your car’s braking fluid to make its way to your calipers, it must be pumped. That’s the job of your brake master cylinder (BMC). In this article, we’ll briefly describe how this critical component works and explain how you can identify warning signs that it’s failing. Then, we’ll shed some light on why you should have it replaced by a trained mechanic.

A Brief Overview Of The Braking System

As mentioned, brake fluid needs to be pumped to your vehicle’s front calipers. The fluid begins in the master cylinder, which is located near your braking pedal. When you press the pedal, hydraulic pressure is created within the BMC; that pressure pushes the fluid through the lines. Eventually, it reaches the calipers, which allows the pads to apply pressure against the rotors.

Even though most people refer to it as one component, the master cylinder is actually separated into two parts. If one part fails, the other part is able to deliver enough fluid to stop your car.

Warning Sign Of A Possible Failure

Brake master cylinders are very dependable and rarely fail. That said, they are susceptible to leaks. If the leak cannot be repaired, the component must be replaced. One of the first signs of a leaking BMC is a “squishy” brake pedal. When you press down on the pedal, you’ll notice that it travels further to the floor than normal. That’s called “extended travel.” It happens because a leak is preventing the master cylinder from producing the pressure needed to push the fluid to the calipers.

If you take your foot off the pedal and immediately press it again, you’ll feel a little more pressure, but the problem is not going to correct itself. It’s time to have the BMC replaced.

Should You Replace The Component Yourself?

If you own a few rudimentary tools, you’ll be able to replace the BMC without the help of a mechanic. That said, it can be a time-consuming job, especially if you have very little experience working under the hood. You’ll need to suction out the existing brake fluid, disconnect the sensor that monitors the level, and remove the lines and bolts that hold the component in place. Once the replacement is in, you’ll need to bleed the lines.

It’s far easier to take your car to a repair shop and ask the mechanics to replace the brake master cylinder for you. You’ll pay a little more for the labor, but you’ll have the peace of mind of knowing they’re performing the job correctly.

Summer may be a time for vacations and recreational activities in Southern Maryland for human beings, but pets may not be privy to the same luxuries. Summer recreation may not always include our four-legged friends, as summer heat and other issues can pose a threat to companion animals. As a result, pet parents must make pet safety a priority when the weather heats up.

The Humane Society of the United States says that the summer months can be uncomfortable and dangerous for pets. Temperatures that may be tolerable for adults and children who are dressed accordingly may not be so for animals covered in fur. It’s vital to help pets stay comfortable and safe as summer temperatures heat up. Pet parents also must be aware of particular dangers that go hand-in-hand with summertime activities.

· Practice vehicle safety. It is never acceptable to leave pets in parked cars, even for a minute. Temperatures inside vehicles can rise quickly and considerably in a matter of minutes, even with the windows opened slightly. HSUS says on an 85-degree-day, temperatures inside parked cars can reach 102 F within 10 minutes. Pets can suffer irreversible and even fatal organ damage in that period of time. Congested roadways and hectic schedules can anger drivers in a hurry to get from point A to point B.

While it’s easy to grow frustrated on the road, the growing number of incidents of road rage and driver aggression is a significant concern that should make drivers think twice before venting their frustrations when behind the wheel.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the number of fatal accidents involving enraged drivers has increased tenfold since 2004. Between 2010 and 2013, the percentage of drivers in the Washington, D.C. who said they often felt “uncontrollable anger toward another driver on the road” doubled, from 6 percent to 12 percent. Aggression on the part of drivers is routinely cited as a major contributor to many fatal crashes and other accidents.

According to the American Psychological Association, some people may be predisposed to road rage. Risk-takers, individuals who tend to anger more easily and people who identify as being generally aggressive or take-charge types may have a higher propensity to get angry behind the wheel.

The term “road rage” was coined by a local Los Angeles, Calif., news station after shootings occurred on several freeways in that city. NHTSA defines road rage as a driver “committing moving traffic offenses so as to endanger other persons or property; an assault with a motor vehicle or other dangerous weapon by the operator or passenger of one motor vehicle on the operator or passengers of another motor vehicle.” Road rage and aggressive driving are similar, but in the eyes of the law, road rage may result in a criminal charge while aggression may lead to a traffic citation.

While few drivers can say they have never become heated while driving, routine rage or aggressiveness is a cause for concern.

The following are some ways drivers can tame their aggressive driving.

· Allow for ample time to get to your destination. Feeling rushed on the way to an appointment or event may encourage risky road behavior or make you more likely to quickly lose your patience with fellow motorists. Allow for plenty of time to get where you need to go and you may feel calmer and more in control should traffic spring up. Even calling a party at your destination and explaining the traffic situation can alleviate tension.

· Share your commute. Commuters are more likely to experience road rage than non-commuters, simply because they tend to be on the roads each day in the heart of busy traffic. Carpool with another person to break up the driving responsibilities. Sitting in the passenger seat a few times per week may help keep your aggression levels in check.

· Think before reacting. It’s tempting to yell or signal to a driver that you are angered by his or her reckless driving. But take a few deep breaths before reacting, and you may feel more relaxed and more willing to let things go.

· Practice safe driving habits. Set an example on the roadways by following the speed limit, driving courteously and yielding to drivers when necessary. It’s better to drive defensively at all times than risk getting into an accident by driving aggressively.

Aggressive driving has the potential to be dangerous. Curbing driver anger is one of the keys to keeping the roadways safe.

Distracted driving can be very dangerous in Southern Maryland.

Diverting one’s attention from the road for mere seconds can have serious, and potentially fatal, consequences.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found distracted driving kills more than 15 people each day while injuring more than 1,200. Any activity that takes attention away from driving is considered a distraction. These include taking your hands off the wheel, daydreaming or engaging in any behavior that takes your eyes off of the road. Certain activities are known distractions, and understanding which habits can be dangerous and making strides to correct behaviors can help save lives, prevent injuries and reduce accident-related expenses.

A study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute indicates 80 percent of crashes and 65 percent of near-crashes in the United States involve some form of driver distraction. This distraction took place a mere three seconds before the vehicle crash. An Allstate Canada marketing survey of 1,605 Canadian adults conducted between July 26 and July 28 found that, although the vast majority of Canadians thinks driving while distracted is unacceptable, nearly three out of four Canadian drivers admits to engaging in a behavior that is considered a distraction. That is perhaps in part because drivers are not aware just how distracting some the following behaviors truly are.

Using mobile phones

Leading the list of the top distractions behind the wheel are mobile phones. Phones now do more than just place calls, and drivers often cannot pull away from their phones, even when driving. According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, studies have shown that driving performance is lowered and the level of distraction is higher for drivers who are heavily engaged in cell phone conversations. The use of a hands-free device does not lower distraction levels. The percentage of vehicle crashes and near-crashes attributed to dialing is nearly identical to the number associated with talking or listening.

Accident rates have increased thanks to texting, which involves a person taking his or her hands and eyes off of the road. A 2009 study by Car and Driver magazine compared the dangers of texting while driving to the effects of driving drunk to see which would be more dangerous under the same conditions. Measuring the time it takes to brake after being alerted by a red light to stop, the reaction time was recorded when the driver was legally drunk, reading an e-mail and sending a text. Texting easily elicited the slowest response time.

Ironically, in January 2011, Texas man Chance Bothe drove off of a cliff after texting that he had to stop texting or risk dying in a car accident. Bothe survived but sustained significant injuries and had to be revived from death three times.

Moving Objects

Whether there’s a pet bouncing in the front seat or children being boisterous in the back, passengers and items moving around the car are significant distractions. Turning around to look at the kids or to reach for a ball that may be rolling around on the floor of the car can take a person’s eyes off the road. If something really is important and needs to be addressed, it is much safer to pull over and take care of it before getting back on the road.

Daydreaming

Many people will admit to daydreaming behind the wheel or looking at a person or object outside of the car for too long. Perhaps they’re checking out a house in a new neighborhood or thought they saw someone they knew on the street corner. It can be easy to veer into the direction your eyes are focused, causing an accident. In addition to trying to stay focused on the road, some drivers prefer the help of lane departure warning systems.

Eating

Those who haven’t quite mastered walking and chewing gum at the same time may want to avoid eating while driving. The majority of foods require a person’s hands to be taken off of the wheel and their eyes to be diverted from the road. Reaching in the back seat to share some French fries with the kids is also distracting.

Try to eat meals before getting in the car. For those who must snack while en route, take a moment to pull over at a rest area and spend 10 minutes snacking there before resuming the trip.

Reading

Glancing at an advertisement, updating a Facebook status or reading a book are all activities that should be avoided when driving. Even pouring over a traffic map or consulting the digital display of a GPS system can be distracting.

When driving, attention should be placed on the task of safely getting from point A to point B. All other activities taking place in the vehicle are distractions that can end up risking a person’s life.

The Cheseldine Car Wash features a 140-ft. tunnel. With nine self-serve bays and 16 vacuums, customers can stop in any time for a quick rinse or a full-service wash. The car wash has over a dozen employees ready to keep those freshly repaired cars spic and span.

In 2007, the Cheseldines went into the pre-owned vehicle sales business, under the mentor-ship of Lewie Aldridge, local car salesmen and previous owner of Aldridge Ford. “When we started in the car business, we didn’t know much about it, as far as the buying and selling side,” Johnny said. “Lewie was our mentor. He showed us the ropes and gave us direction.”

When the Cheseldine Auto Group buys a car, they can service and repair it on-site and clean it thoroughly. Customers can trust that those selling the cars are familiar with them. “We know the cars and all their history,” Johnny said. Cheseldine is so confident in what they buy and their work that they offer a three month, 5,000 mile warranty on every car they sell. Furthermore, customers can have confidence in bringing their car back for repairs and tune-ups. “Everything we sell we can service. We work on both foreign and domestic,” Johnny said.

Everyone that works in the various departments are the core of the Cheseldine brand. “That’s what makes our business,” Johnny said. “We think we have the best employees. They are like family.” Cheseldine maintains a low turnover rate, keeping many employees for decades. That consistency translates into great customer service. “When you come to any of our facilities, you will deal with the same employees,” Johnny stated.

Rather than being owned by a franchise, whose headquarters are out of state and hard to contact, Cheseldine Auto Group is owned by Gary and Johnny who are at one of the facilities most days. The difference between family-owned and big corporate owned businesses is that if a situation occurs, it can be handled in a timely fashion, due to the fact that the owners are readily available. The Cheseldine family, including all the employees, are personally, financially, and emotionally committed to the success of every transaction. Few things can fall through the cracks with everyone focused on the goal of customer satisfaction.

“Our grandfather had a local seafood business,” Johnny explained. “He taught us as kids that honesty and quality is the best we can offer. And we’ve been blessed, very blessed in St. Mary’s County.”

The Cheseldines feel an indelible obligation to the people and the economy of St, Mary’s County. “Being a local business, we see where the money can go to help charities that will help the community,” Johnny said. Each year, the managers of Cheseldine sit down and choose which organizations to support through fund-raising and direct donations. Recognizing that they can’t always help everyone that approaches, they try to give to local organizations. Over the years, recipients have included the Rescue Squad, schools, churches, and fire departments. Their involvement has also included Toys for Tots, Blessing of the Fleet, and Cruising for Cancer.
