The drive-in movie theater was the brainchild of Richard Hollingshead, Jr., an auto products sales manager at his father’s Whiz Auto Products store. Hollingshead wanted to combine his passion for automobiles with his love of films. After testing different parking configurations and imitating weather conditions in his own driveway to simulate the drive-in movie experience, Hollingshead filed for a patent for the drive-In theater. He received the patent on May 16, 1933. The first drive-in was opened on June 6, 1933, in Camden, N.J. The price of admission was $.25 for the car and each person inside. Drive-in theaters peaked in popularity in the 1950s, when there were roughly 5,000 drive-ins operating across the United States and Canada. According to Drive-Ins.com, currently there are about 365 drive-ins remaining in the United States and 55 in Canada.
Aggressive Driving Facts
Aggressive driving and excess weight in a vehicle can dramatically reduce fuel efficiency. According to U.S. Department of Energy, aggressive driving that includes rapid acceleration and braking wastes gas, lowering gas mileage by 33 percent on highways and 5 percent when driving around town. Driving at higher speeds can also negatively affect gas mileage, which begins to decrease rapidly at speeds above 50 miles per hour, with each five miles per hour more than 50 mph akin to paying an extra $0.25 per gallon for gas. Drivers who treat their vehicles as rolling storage closets also could be wasting fuel and money, as the DOE notes that an extra 100 pounds in a vehicle could reduce its miles per gallon by 2 percent.
